“Made in Poland” - was titled cover story of “Art. Das Kunstmagazin”, biggest art monthly in Germany (no 1/2009): “Between Revolt and Retropop – Polish Painters raise the Art Market”.
In the XXI century this is the second time where artists from post communist country make international carrier. First time it was Neue Leipziger Schule, artists from East Germany, with Neo Rauch and his students like Matthias Weischer or Tilo Baumgärtel, Christoph Ruckhäberle or Tim Eitel. After 2005 New Leipzig School was one of the successful group of artists promoted “Triumph of Painting” or simply “Return of the Painting”. Now, as wrote “Art” from Hamburg, is time for Polish painters.
Of course, Wilhelm Sasnal is very well known from few years, also Rafal Bujnowski, Piotr Jaros, Paulina Olowska. They exhibited in good galleries in Germany and USA, participated with their galleries in Basel Art Fair, Art Cologne, Freeze (London) and Basel Miami Art Fair. I don’t know if we can use term “New Polish School of Painting”, rather not. It isn’t any group like group from Leipzig: from one Academy, one painting class of one professor.
Now this is like generation, like new wave of several individualists. I am sure that in Poland work more like 30 first class painters on high European level. I am sure that Polish painting is much more like only Wilhelm Sasnal. We have much more interesting artists: well educated, original, open and full of possibilities. Under 35 years old, young assistants at the Academies or independent artists. From Warsaw, Cracow, Wroclaw, Gdansk, Poznan.
Exhibition “Eastern Girls: Poland”, the first part of project, present 6 young women painters from 3 most important art centers in Poland: Warsaw, Cracow and Wroclaw.
Project isn’t only an review of the most interesting young generation of women painters from Poland. This is also show of Polish real girls in their every day life or – sometimes – dreams. This is also panorama of actual mentality and aesthetic of modern Poland.
They studied at good Academies in Poland and also in France and USA. I think that this is a group a very talented, modern and good organizing artists, very active, not only as a painters, also graphic artist, installators, photographers, performers, video artists. Presenting their works in Poland and also on international art scene, taking part on art fairs and festivals, very open mind persons. They representing figurative style of painting, but not traditional, I think that evident in their works is strong influence of photography, video and film, also graffiti and modern design.
I know that in countries of East Europe are much more interesting young artists as somebody expected. We would like to promote them. Maybe it will be East Europe School of Painting or maybe not. First of all we would like to show their paintings in Poland and Lithuania, later on in other countries of our region. But of course we thinking about presentations also in West Europe.
